dalister: a start page that will boost your productivity

It’s been a while since I posted on my blog which is mostly due to a lack of motivation to be honest. It is hard to fill a blog like this with content when there is almost no feedback. I know this is something I just have to deal with because my blog is still at a very early stage but it kind of makes it hard to movtivate myself. However, I was looking at one of my previous posts the other day and I realised that someone had actually tweeted about it! Wow! That really boosted my motivation and I thought this might just be the right time to talk about a project I have been working on for the last few months. It is called dalister (which is still a working title at this stage) and I’d say it is a productivity driven start page. Yeah, that sounds boring and anything but spectacular but I really think that there is no nice and easy solution available out there yet.Let me explain exactly what I mean by “productivity driven start page” and why I think there is nothing like this on the market yet. In one of my previous posts (the one about Finding business ideas by solving your own problems) I wrote about how managing notes, emails todos etc. online is still quite a pain in the ass as there are several tools available that either manage one thing very well and exclude everything else (e.g. a stand alone todo manager) or try to do everything but fail to do anything of that better than just average. Google’s start page iGoogle for example does quite a few things quite ok but nothing reall really well. Box.net on the other hand is a really nice online storage provider but why the hell do I have to use a completely different service to manage my todos? The guys from 6Wunderkinder on the other hand do quite a decent job with their todo management tool (although a web based interface would be nicer than a standalone windows/mac system) but why the hell do I have to sign up for anther service if I want to get SMS alarms or birthday reminders? Dalister could implement all these core functionalities (todo management, notes, alarms & reminders, quick file up- and download, etc.) in one service. It must be super fast, super simple and beautiful. I am not sure whether anyone has ever used this term before but I like to describe dalister as based on the principles of “super simple software (sss)”.

Let’s say you get to work in the morning, you open your browser and the first thing you see is dalister – a nice and simple start page that tells you what you need to do today, including birthdays, things you need to buy for dinner and maybe a couple of files you uploaded at home yesterday which you wanted to print and send out to your insurance. I know, you can do all of these things already and some tools do them really well but can you do them with just one, two or maximum three clicks in such a nice and fun way? Well, I am still looking for a service/tool that does this for me.
I started working on dalister 2 months ago and progress has been rather slow but I kind of like what I have done so far. I’m using ajax/jquery to implement most of the user-browser interaction which gave me quite a few headaches. I have used PHP/MySQL in the past and I am also using it for dalister but jquery is rather new to me so I have to look up all the functions and methods and stuff which is quite cumbersome sometimes. I’m only doing this after work so time is limited unfortunately. Most of my time went into the todo manager module as this is something I really want to use and test in my day job. So far, I have been using pen and paper to track my todos but after a day or two it always starts to get really messy as I cross off, add, change, re-proritise things and so on. It would definitely be nicer if I could to that on my browser start page in a simple and fast manner.
I’ll try to work a bit more on dalister in the next couple of weeks and present some more screenshots or sketches soon. Let me know what you think about dalister in the comments or send me an email!

Für todos tut es rememberthemilk sicherlich auch aber letztlich will ich mich ja nicht für ein paar blöde todos jedes mal bei rememberthemilk einloggen. Viel schöner wäre es doch wenn die wichtigsten Produktivitätstools sofort auf deiner Startseite erscheinen würden. Und noch schöner wäre dann natürlich die Sync-Möglichkeit mit Android/iPhone!
Btw: Interessanter Blog! Aber wen willst du damit genau erreichen bzw. welchen Mehrwert willst du bieten? Ich hatte auch schon mal über etwas ähnliches nachgedacht im Sinne einer einfachen Besprechung von Finanzanlagen …

naja, ich persönlich nutze gar keine Todo-Listen und wenn, dann benutz ich mein Moleskine, daher kann ich die 100%ige Funktionsweise von rememberthemilk nicht beurteilen, aber das, was sie auf deren Startseite so versprechen, sah mir recht ähnlich aus + das man sogar noch per E-Mail und Co. erinnert wird.
Danke, dass du unseren Blog interessant findest. Das ist ein Blog, den ich zusammen mit einem Freund führe, bzw. starte. Wir unterhalten uns einfach regelmäßig (z.B. beim Fitness) über Finanzen & Versicherungen und dachten, man könnte ja die ein oder andere Erkenntnis mal öffentlich machen. Wir sind zwei relativ unterschiedliche Typen was das Thema angeht, daher ergänzen wir uns auch recht gut auf der Seite (hoffe ich ;o)). Ehrlichgesagt hab ich mir keine großen Gedanken über einen speziellen Mehrwert gemacht. Watchlisten, Artikel für Fortgeschrittene, Artikel nach dem Motto “einfach erklärt”, zwischendurch mal einen kleinen Spasseintrag… ich persönlich kannte keinen Blog der diese Sachen vereint. Ich hab mir vorher die Informationen relativ mühsam aus Foren und google zusammengesucht. Nebenbei geht es mir auch darum, dass man sich normal ausdrückt. Die meisten Finanzblogs werfen nur so mit Fremdwörtern umsich, klingt dann auch alles ganz cool und nach Erfahrung, aber das trägt nicht gerade zum entspannten lesen bei. Wir machen beide relativ gutes Geld im Finanzmarkt, aber wir sind keine Profis oder gar Gurus / perfekt. Wir lernen auch noch ständig, man kann den Blog also auch als kleines Notizbuch hernehmen. Nebenbei hoff ich, dass Alex und ich uns auch insofern ergänzen, dass der Blog ein bisschen Dialogähnlich ist.
Aber alles in allem stehen wir noch gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanz am Anfang und das ganze muss noch zurecht geschliffen werden. Irgendwann finden wir schon unsere Linie und bis dahin veröffentlichen wir einfach Stumpf unsere Gedanken und Ideen. :p Das ist hauptsächlich aus Spass an der Freude entstanden.
Wenn ich deinen Blog so lese, muss ich feststellen, dass wir relativ ähnlich sind. Mir geht es nämlich ziemlich so wie dir. Viele Ideen, festangestellt sein ist ganz bequem – bringt gutes Geld und viel Freizeit, bietet aber nicht die Erfüllung, der Traum ist da usw.

Aber ich würde gern was elektronisches haben was mir das ewige Rumkrakeln ersparen und zudem noch nette Funktionen bieten würde

Ich versuche halt darauf hinzuarbeiten, von dieser Bequemlichkeit des Festangestelltendaseins wegzukommen. Aber ist echt nicht einfach wenn man sich eben selber nicht so sicher ist, ob das mit den eigenen Ideen dann auch mal wirklich zum Überleben reicht.
